MHP to Host Ribbon Cutting for Unity Place Affordable Apartments

Celebrating a new community center and 394 renovated apartments in Southeast DC

Media invited to attend!

Date: April 29, 2026

Time: 10:00 am – Noon

Location: 4419 3rd St. SE, Washington, DC 20032

Silver Spring, MD (April 9, 2026) – Nonprofit developer Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP) announced today it will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the renovation of Unity Place Apartments, a community that provides affordable housing for 394 families in Southeast DC, Ward 8.

With a total investment of $132 million, the renovation of Unity Place involved extensive upgrades including a new community center, which will expand the ability to provide targeted program offerings and supportive resources for residents.

The April 29 event will feature remarks by DC Councilmember Trayon White, Director of the DC Department of Housing and Community Development Colleen Green, Executive Director/CEO of DC Housing Finance Agency Christopher Donald, MHP President Robert A. Goldman and numerous other project partners and community members.

Unity Place is MHP’s largest affordable housing property to date. Shortly after acquiring it, MHP installed solar panels throughout the property, as part of a plan to improve sustainability. Recent upgrades include a new playground and a multi-faceted community center for events and resident services. The Evelyn Harrison Community Center will be officially dedicated during the event, in memory of a vocal community leader. The center will host several wraparound programs and supportive services in alignment with MHP’s mission of housing people, empowering families, and strengthening neighborhoods. Program examples include MHP’s signature Community Life educational enrichment programs, food and household item distributions, healthcare resources, career counseling, and more. The property’s tenants association will now have a dedicated place to hold meetings, which encourages resident involvement and engagement.

“We are excited to unveil new features at Unity Place, which will provide opportunities to better serve individuals and families living in our largest property,” said MHP President Robert A. Goldman. “MHP is proud to fulfill our mission of preserving and expanding quality affordable housing, and we could not have accomplished this enormous undertaking with the support of our partners.”

Renovated apartments feature upgraded kitchens, bathrooms, closets, appliances, flooring, paint, windows, entry locks, electronic fobs, LED lighting and more. Extensive infrastructure upgrades enhance efficiency throughout the property and include electrical systems, internet wiring, HVAC systems, fire alarms, water heaters, and more. The leasing office now includes an accessible ramp, and additional units now meet accessibility standards.

With a prime location just minutes from South Capitol Street, Unity Place is in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Southeast DC and offers easy access to downtown and public transportation. This garden-style community is surrounded by expansive, well-maintained grounds.

“Unity Place is a powerful example of what can be achieved when government, community partners and mission-driven developers work together,” said DHCD Director Colleen Green. “By leveraging our local and federal resources, we were able to help the tenants preserve affordability, benefit from the upgrades made throughout the property and remain District residents.”

Affordable housing is a major need throughout the DC region. MHP will restrict 100% of Unity Place apartment homes to residents earning at or below 60% of the area median income, preserving affordability for low- and moderate-income community members. Forty of those units will be set aside for Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH), a model combining affordable rental housing with voluntary, flexible, and comprehensive support services designed for individuals with chronic homelessness and severe disabilities.

“We’re proud to help finance the substantial renovation of Unity Place Apartments, enriching lives and enhancing access to quality affordable homes for nearly 400 families in Southeast D.C.,” said Jordan Bishop, Executive Director, J.P. Morgan Community Development Banking. “At J.P. Morgan, our affordable housing investment work is rooted in the idea that strong communities create opportunity. Through strong public-private collaboration, Unity Place preserves affordability and ensures District residents benefit from thoughtful investments and community upgrades, helping to strengthen the fabric of D.C. and enabling families to build stability and thrive.”

MHP extends its gratitude to all funding, philanthropic and community partners who made this project possible. US Department of Housing and Urban Development provided significant project funding, DC Housing Finance Agency provided bond financing, DC Department of Housing and Community Development provided a federally subsidized Section 108 loan, and DC Housing Authority coordinated PSA units. Additional partners include Capital Impact Partners, Atlantic Union Bank, JPMorganChase, PNC, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, Wells Fargo, NeighborWorks America, Enterprise, TD, Worthington Woods Tenants Association, and Anacostia Economic Development Corporation.
