Green Programs

MHP provides more than 2,275 quality affordable homes in Montgomery County and neighboring communities.

Green living is an MHP core value. MHP has won recognition as a NeighborWorks Green Organization by demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to sustainable operations. To achieve this designation, MHP demonstrated adherence to green business practices, showing a commitment to creating healthier, energy-efficient environments for homeowners, renters, community residents and staff. MHP focuses its real estate development activity on meeting Enterprise Green Communities standards through energy-efficient upgrades and use of green building products and processes throughout its multi-family portfolio.

Since 2009, MHP has shared resources and information with residents about the benefits of recycling, healthy eating, and sustainability, distributing recycling containers door-to-door, building community gardens, and incorporating the information into the curriculum for Community Life student enrichment programs. This includes a partnership with Audubon Naturalist Society to teach young students about nature.

In 2011, MHP piloted its first youth Green Club for children in families residing in the Glenville Road community. Successes have included collecting more than 200 pounds of litter, achieving a 92-percent resident participation rate for its recycling program, and building a new community garden at the Long Branch Community Center, yielding 20 pounds of produce in a single season. The program has been extended to other MHP communities. Current programming focuses on nutrition, recycling, dealing with invasive species, habitat, soil infiltration, ecosystems, and other sustainability concepts.

MHP also sponsors annual Earth Day cleanup activities in several neighborhoods, including Long Branch and North Wheaton.
