Nina’s Story: A Journey of Resilience and Second Chances
Nina was seeking a second chance when she moved into The Residences at Forest Glen, having spent decades raising four children as a stay-at-home mom. She had no Social Security income and no retirement plan of her own. After her divorce, she had to start over, which meant finding a new home and a job.
When Nina first moved to Montgomery County to be closer to her daughter, she quickly realized that most housing was outside her budget. She moved in with a friend, but that friend was unreliable and did not pay the rent. As a result, Nina received an eviction notice, and that label followed her everywhere she went. Finding an apartment of her own seemed impossible.
Thanks to outreach from our State and County partners, MHP became aware of Nina’s situation and was able to help. Our outreach team worked through the leasing process with the building’s property management company and helped determine if she qualified. Luckily, she did! Nina loves her quality, affordable apartment at The Residences at Forest Glen and is proud to call it home.
Today, Nina works at a nonprofit shelter, helping women facing housing instability. This work is meaningful to her, especially because she knows that, like the women she helps, she too faced housing instability, and it was scary. She spoke at The Residences at Forest Glen ribbon cutting, and in her speech, she said, “I believe we are all worthy of dignity, stability, and just a place to call home.”
