Miriam’s Story: Finding Home and Health
Miriam and her family have lived at MHP’s renovated Gardens of Gaithersburg for 25 years, following a period of housing instability. She now appreciates the stability MHP offers. Miriam, who lives with her son and brother, shared in our 2025 Mission Video, “This has been the longest our family has been able to be in one place without worrying about not having a roof over your head, food on the table, or anything like that.”
In addition to housing challenges, Miriam faced difficulties securing healthcare for her family. Her brother’s illness resulted in the amputation of one leg, and during COVID, he lost part of the other foot. The family’s health concerns grew when her son also became seriously ill and required another wheelchair.
Following MHP’s renovations, Miriam and her family moved into an ADA-compliant unit at the Gardens of Gaithersburg.
“At my age, I could get into a senior living type of situation, but my brother and my son are too young, so there is no place to go for that,” she said.
Miriam expresses gratitude to MHP for enabling her family to stay together, noting that the nonprofit supports entire families rather than just individuals. She said, “I’m grateful that MHP thought about the whole community, not just people who are at the median income, but also those with disabilities, whether they be physical or mental. There aren’t a lot of companies, groups, or organizations that think about the whole, and MHP thinks about the whole.”
