Silver Spring, MD (August 14, 2023)
MHP recently held our annual backpack drive to help students get the tools they need to start the school year right. Each child received a backpack filled with grade-appropriate supplies. We brought more than 450 backpacks directly to students participating in our Community Life programs and other young residents throughout our properties with community centers. MHP thanks the many individual and corporate donors who contributed to this major endeavor.
This year, MHP expanded our efforts, bringing an additional 160 backpacks to Rollingwood Apartments, a newly acquired property in the Lyttonsville neighborhood of Silver Spring, MD. MHP staff connected with residents there, holding a pool party with free food, face painting, and information booths. We thank Rock Creek Forest Elementary, Montgomery County Recreation, Donaldson, and MRK for partnering on this event.
MHP also held a block party at Worthington Woods in Washington, D.C., where we gave out more than 140 backpacks thanks to funding from Wells Fargo and the property’s tenant association. We signed up more than 25 residents for career counseling services through our partner, Career Catchers. MHP will soon begin renovations at Worthington Woods, to include the addition of a 3,200 square foot community space with a computer lab, classroom space, large community room, kitchenette, private space for health screenings, and restrooms.
In total, this year’s backpack drives served more than 750 children and teens. MHP is proud to set our residents up for a successful school year by providing essential academic supplies.
