Silver Spring, MD (June 03, 2026) – Silver Spring-based coffee shop Kefa Café will mark a major milestone on June 20, celebrating three decades of sustained community service in Silver Spring’s Fenton Village neighborhood. The event, supported by Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP), will bring together current and prospective customers from a mosaic of cultures and backgrounds to enjoy live music from Elijah Jamal Balbed & the Silver Spring All-Stars, who will perform from noon to 2 pm.
Since opening in the business district in 1996, Kefa Café has become a favorite community coffee shop and has expanded to two additional locations. “We are incredibly grateful to have served the Silver Spring community for 30 years. We couldn’t have done it without our customers, our family,” the coffee shop announced on social media.
The June 20th event will also unveil the coffee shop’s new façade improvements, a project made possible by MHP and Montgomery County’s Facade Refresh program. The façade improvements included new awnings, signage, outdoor seating, planters, and a new color scheme.
Since 2018, MHP has been supporting small businesses on Bonifant Street that have been affected by Purple Line construction. “As part of our community development and neighborhood revitalization efforts, MHP works with local businesses like Kefa Café to build resiliency, especially given recent Purple Line construction in the area,” said Chris Gillis, MHP’s Director of Policy and Neighborhood Development. “We’re excited to see Kefa Café celebrate this major milestone and grateful for the opportunity to support them over the years.”
MHP’s neighborhood revitalization and community empowerment initiatives have remarkably expanded in recent years. In the Long Branch neighborhood, MHP led and funded the restoration of the historic and long-vacant Flower Theatre façade, a $500,000 investment that transformed a highly visible anchor of the business district. MHP also facilitated numerous façade improvements and public art installations throughout the neighborhood, enhancing the corridor’s visual identity and supporting small business visibility. Additionally, MHP staff have been assisting small businesses in applying for the Purple Line construction impact grant program.
MHP’s investments in these business districts support not only physical improvements but also the economic and cultural resilience of these corridors.
