Community Investment Tax Credits

Do you want to ensure that your donation creates a meaningful impact in your community and saves you money at the same time?

That sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? But the opportunity is real.

With a donation of $500 or more in support of MHP’s Community Life Programs, you can participate in the Community Investment Tax Credit Program, which makes you eligible to:

  • Reduce your Maryland tax liability by earning a tax credit for 50% of your donation, as well as a tax deduction on state and federal tax returns.
  • Make a targeted community impact by supporting Community Life Programs that provide educational opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents.

For more information about how you can make a difference in the lives of low- and moderate-income Montgomery County families, contact Eva Dillon, edillon@mhpartners.org.

What is the Community Investment Tax Credit Program?

The Community Investment Tax Credit program, or CITC, is a program of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development that provides tax incentives to encourage Maryland business entities and/or residents to support nonprofit’s, like MHP, that are working to improve our community.

MHP’s tax credits support Community Life Programs for low-income families right here in Montgomery County. These programs served more than 1,200 people last year with preschools, homework clubs, teen and summer enrichment programs, adult programs and events. Deep funding cuts have put these programs in peril. The CITC program gives you an incentive to help us make up the shortfall and keep providing these much-needed programs.

Who can participate in the Community Investment Tax Credit Program?

Individuals: An individual who lives in Maryland on the last day of the taxable year or if the individual maintains a place of abode in Maryland for more than six months of the taxable year and is physically present in the State for 183 days or more during the taxable year.

Businesses: Any entity that conducts a trade or business in the State and is subject to: the State income tax on individuals or corporations; the public service company franchise tax or the insurance premiums tax. These types of entities generally include corporations, public utility companies, insurance companies, financial institutions, S corporations, partnerships, sole proprietorships and limited liability corporations.
