MHP has a long history of deepening and extending our programming with the assistance of AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers. We are proud of the work of Walter Carcamo and Yajaira Amaya, who assist young learners in MHP’s Community Life enrichment programs, and Meghan Maquet, AmeriCorps NeighborWorks Economic Empowerment Coordinator in MHP’s Neighborhoods Department.
MHP Glenville Road Site Coordinator Violeta Martell supervises Walter, who brings special insight into his work with young residents because he is an MHP resident too. Violeta says:
Meghan Maquet is MHP’s AmeriCorps VISTA Economic Empowerment Coordinator, a position supported by NeighborWorks. Chris Gillis, MHP director of Policy and Neighborhood Development, says Meghan is making many important contributions. These include: helping support small businesses impacted by Purple Line construction in the Long Branch and Bonifant communities via social media marketing; connecting MHP residents with scholarship opportunities to further their education; and supporting MHP’s efforts to reemploy residents who have lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic. He says, “We are grateful to have her!”
Bravo to all of our AmeriCorps VISTAs for helping MHP deliver on our commitment to housing people, empowering families, and strengthening neighborhoods!
