Delores: Life, Food, and Family at The Bonifant
When Delores viewed the available studio apartment at the Bonifant, she said, “Where do I sign?”
Delores is an energetic go-getter who thrives on being active. She has worked at many jobs throughout her lifetime and served as an administrative assistant for many years. Delores raised two sons, both of whom are now working adults and caring for their own families. She is the glue that holds her family together, cooking for family holidays, supporting her granddaughter, and visiting her sisters in care facilities.
As a single woman and a senior, Delores relies heavily on income from Social Security. However, she is grateful that her health allows her to remain in the workforce and obtain supplemental income. Delores currently works as a cashier selling food at major events at a large venue in Washington D.C. She knows how to move the line along while being friendly and providing exceptional customer service. She holds herself to a high standard and believes that patrons should be able to expect high quality service. Delores relies on public transportation to get to and from her job.
Delores has lived at The Bonifant for more than six years. Originally from DC, she has lived in many places throughout the DMV region. After sharing a home with her brother in Prince George’s County, Delores was looking for an apartment home where she could enjoy privacy and independent living that fit her budget.
One day she saw a story about The Bonifant in a free newspaper they pass out at the Metro. She saved the number and checked into it. Delores applied, but she was waitlisted for about a year. When she finally viewed the available studio apartment, she said, “Where do I sign?”
Delores loves the storage in her apartment. She also likes the sunlight and the large kitchen, which is essential because she is a passionate cook. Delores says, “You must have a special knack for cooking. You have to watch your pot. You must know how to marinate, tenderize, and cook your meat.” Delores cooks for 30 people each Thanksgiving and she often gets requests to make special dishes such as oxtail. Delores also likes to read Agatha Christie and other mystery novels.
MHP is proud to make home possible for people like Delores, who are integral members of our community.
