Bertila: A determined voice for low-income earners
Determined to be a voice for low-income earners, MHP resident Ms. Bertila testified at the Montgomery County Council public hearing on April 9. In her testimony, the Silver Spring-based resident advocated for additional funding for affordable housing in the county, urging more support for low-income earners like her. “I am here to be a voice for those who are typically not heard,” she said. “I have lived with my family in one of the Montgomery Housing Partnership’s apartment communities in the Long Branch neighborhood for almost a decade. I live with my daughter and granddaughters. I recently lost my sister to cancer.” Bertila said she also lost her employment but expressed hope that she will find a new job opportunity soon. Before moving to an MHP property, she rented a room in the White Oak area. “Life is difficult, but it was even more difficult during the pandemic,” she told the hearing.
