Preservation of 1950s Apartments Hailed as Model Development

When Gilbert Highlands reopened in September, it became the first housing development in Maryland to open after receiving funding from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009. The $5.34 million acquisition and renovation of the 21-unit apartment community is a model public-private partnership that came together over the course of three years despite the tough economy. Federal, state and local officials were on hand to tour the green renovation. MHP acquired the property in 2007. The renovation began last November and created 28 jobs.

The completion of Gilbert Highlands raises MHP's total investments in Takoma Park and the Long Branch neighborhoods, through public and private financing, to $40 million over the last 10 years. Gilbert Highlands includes two residential buildings, an onsite rental office, and a community center that houses a bilingual preschool and computer lab. The preschool opened on Sept. 15 and operates a morning and afternoon session for children living at Gilbert Highlands, Crossroads at Flower, Greenwood Terrace, Browning, Sligo View, and Merrimac Gardens.
