Congratulations to Mekala Rajagopal, MHP’s Youth Volunteer of the Year for 2015.

Now 16, Mekala started volunteering with MHP in late 2014, and has contributed nearly 200 hours of community service toward various events and activities. She’s interacted with MHP staff and residents; helped out with toy drives and golf tournaments; updated databases and mailing lists; attended the Building Dreams Tour.

The Rockville native has also become a vocal advocate for the need for more affordable and mixed-income housing. Mekala spent several weeks of 2015 interviewing real estate industry officials, including MHP’s Robert Goldman, for her sophomore research project on why affordable housing is critically needed in Maryland. She also gained valuable insights first-hand through her volunteer efforts, which she was able to share with her teachers and classmates at Richard Montgomery High School.
