Brookings Report Findings on State of Metro America
MHP's Circle of Builders Breakfast forum on June 11 featured a lively discussion about the State of Metro America and how Montgomery County stacks up to its peers. Population growth and housing development opportunities in the County dominated the question & answer session. Participants included Alan Berube, Senior Fellow and Research Director, Brookings Institute Metropolitan Policy Program; Steven A. Silverman, Director of Montgomery County’s Department of Economic Development. Tom Farasy of Terre Verde Communities moderated the session. Participants are pictured below with MHP’s President, Robert Goldman.

Berube gave a terrific presentation around the demographic shifts of the United States’ major economic centers and where Washington, DC and Montgomery County ranks. The event was held in Bethesda at Chevy Chase Bank, a Division of Capital One, N.A. The next Circle of Builders Breakfast forum will be held in October.

Affordable Housing Landscape Over Next 5 Years?
Montgomery County’s most recent growth policy expects the population to grow past 1 million residents, and include more minorities and seniors. Artie Harris, MHP’s Director of Real Estate Development, recently joined Priya Jayachandran from Bank of America, and Rollin Stanley from the Montgomery County Planning Board, for a panel discussion exploring the state of affordable housing at the Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County’s Annual Meeting in Bethesda.

Panelists discussed trends in multi-family development and highlighted some creative financing options. Artie also discussed MHP’s strategy for preserving affordable housing in communities where residents are within walking distance to mass transit, retail, and schools. Miranda Spivack of the Washington Post moderated the session.
